Rank System

All students have the option of obtaining Judo rank from the Maryland Judo Association.  It will be the student’s responsibility to keep track of all competition points, complete any required certifications, attend clinics and get graded in kata by certified kata officials, and pay all associated fees to the local and national governing bodies.   It is highly recommended that any student who wishes to be a competitor on the local, national and international levels obtain ranking from the Maryland Judo Association.  If you are looking to become an Olympic level Judo competitor, you must do that under the Maryland Judo Association.

Those who do not desire to be ranked through Maryland Judo Association will follow the requirements for Cecil Ryu Judo.  The Cecil Ryu Judo rankings only go up to 1st degree black belt as of May, 2012.  There are no testing fees and no contracts for Cecil Ryu Judo rankings.  Time in grade for Judo is not affected by competition, which is why those who want to be on the competitive fast track for advancement to black belt should consider getting ranking under the Maryland Judo Association.  All students will be taught the same information, without bias or favoritism.  Adults and children have the same ranking guidelines.  The minimum age to obtain ranking beyond white stripe is six years old.  The minimum age for a Judo black belt is 13.

A note about competition:  unless you can show some previous grappling experience or grappling training in addition to what you are learning in class, I will NOT sign off on you competing in anyone’s tournament until you are at least an orange belt. You also need to be able to do a standing forward roll over someone about your size who is kneeling down on all fours.  And, you must be able to standing falls to the front, both sides and rear.

Cecil Ryu Judo Ranking System:
